New Scholarship Structure (Effective Fall Semester, 2025)!
WSC students receive payroll certifications through National Association of Certified Public Bookkeepers NACPB

WILLISTON, N.D. – Recently, some Williston State College Payroll Accounting students earned their payroll certifications through the National Association of Certified Public Bookkeepers, or NACPB.
This was the first time WSC had offered Payroll Accounting as a Special Topics course, BADM 299. As a pilot course, it was a success with 10 students receiving their certification upon completion of the course.
Coordination with the WSC Accounting Advisory Board helped to bring awareness of the need to incorporate this course into the curriculum to better prepare students for additional job opportunities in the area. Also, students took the initiative to inquire about further instruction regarding payroll instruction to faculty and addressed the need for further instruction.
“When the option became available to take the payroll course, I was excited and jumped at the opportunity. The program itself had tons of great information and I am thrilled to have earned my payroll certification with this course. I am hoping I can utilize it in my career soon,” remarked WSC student Stephanie Tofte.
For students to take the NACPB Certification Exam, the organization had to review the course content and approve the course as a preparation course for examination. Once approved, funding was needed for students to access the ability to take the exam. On Giving Day, back in September, a community donation was received that gave the ability for students to take the exam with costs fully covered. The students took the exam after completing all course content and was incorporated as the course’s final exam.
“I have already been interested in working in payroll, so getting this certification was valuable and exciting for me. I am grateful for the foundation this class gave me and I look forward to using this knowledge in my career and continuing to learn and grow in payroll accounting,” said WSC student Verlene LeBaron.
