WSC puts on free sessions for in-demand, high-paying careers for h.s. students

WILLISTON, N.D. - Everyone in the Bakken knows there are a number of high-paying, in-demand jobs just waiting to be filled. But how does a person know if they'll be good at any of those jobs, or even like them?

Those are questions many regional high school students are asking themselves.

In order to help address these issues, Williston State is putting on short hands-on sessions designed to introduce high school student to several different careers in today's high-demand fields. These sessions will cover welding, diesel, and petroleum production.

"Today's student is faced with a lot of opportunities and decisions; many are trying to decide whether or not they should go to school or go into the workforce," says Brian Rencher, WSC Transportation and Energy Coordinator. "Even though it's tempting to enter the workforce directly, time spent earning a degree in one of these fields will give you a better chance at higher paying jobs, management positions, better hours, more benefits, etc. It makes you more employable and more competitive in this economy."

Whatever the choice may be, finding out you actually like a specific career before starting a program or job is incredibly useful and time saving. Career Exploration days will additionally show students what an actual classroom setting might be like at WSC.

"Our career and tech programs are very hands on," says Rencher. "A student will learn a lot in the two short hours they're here, which is really the point. They'll pick up enough basic skills to say, 'I like this' or 'I don't like this', It's all about exploration."

Upcoming sessions include:

Welding | Feb 17 & Mar 13
Learn Basic skills of cutting and welding metals with hands-on torch, plasma and arc welding.

Diesel | Mar 12, 14, 26
Learn basics of diesel engines and components on modern trucks and equipment.

Petroleum Production | Apr 23
Learn basic skills for petroleum pumping operations and programmable logic control systems.

All sessions are free and held from 2 - 4pm in the Western Star Building on WSC's campus. Dates and times were carefully selected to accommodate high school early-out days or days off, so most student schedules should allow for attendance.

Any high school sophomores, juniors, or seniors interested are welcome to attend. Pre-registration is not required, but preferred.
