WSC honor society to host community events
WILLISTON, N.D. - The Williston State College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), an international honor society, is preparing for several events this holiday season. The first event will be the "Reindeer Ramble" on Monday, December 2nd at 5 p.m. The group is also arranging a holiday food drive that will run December 2nd to 13th.
Phi Theta Kappa was founded in 1918 and works to "recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students." Students with excellent academic standing are invited to join PTK and work with their peers and the community to develop leadership and service skills. "Through their service learning activities, PTK is able to help out the community when it is needed," said WSC Instructor and PTK Advisor Maren Furuseth. "Their volunteer work betters the community as a whole."
Students in PTK work with advisors like Furuseth to organize a variety of events. Each event is led by one or more members to give them a sense of organization and collaboration. "PTK gives back to the school and community through its' many events, fundraising for nonprofit organizations, and volunteering in the community," said Rebekah Fetzer, WSC sophomore and president of the school's PTK chapter. Students are responsible for the success of community events like the Reindeer Ramble.
The Reindeer Ramble, a one-mile fun run/walk, kicks off this holiday season at "the Well" on the WSC campus Monday, December 2nd. Registration begins at 4:30 p.m. and the race starts at 5:00 p.m. The cost is $5 per person or $20 for groups of 5 - 7 members. The participants choosing to run will be doing so on a set course outside, however, the walking portion will take place on the walking track in "the Well".
The event is geared towards children, but adults are more than welcome to join. Participants are encouraged to dress in Christmas-themed clothing or costumes and can walk, jog, or run individually or as a group. After the race, runners can participate in cookie decorating and enjoy hot cocoa. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes as well as other categories. All events are open to the public.
Also starting December 2nd, PTK is hosting a holiday food drive for the local food pantry. They are looking for non-perishable food items and there will be multiple drop-off locations at WSC. Groups or individuals that wish to donate food but cannot make it to WSC can contact PTK and a pick-up will be arranged. The food drive will go until Friday, December 13th.
