WSC PTK used book drive is under way

WILLISTON, N.D. - Williston State College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa is pleased to announce that it has kicked off its used textbook drive, in partnership with Better World Books, who is in turn working with the Arbor Day Foundation.
PTK advisor Kim Weismann, encourages the community to allow the group to help with your spring cleaning and getting your old, unwanted or unused books out of the house.
“We will take any books, not just textbooks,” said PTK advisor Kimberly Weismann. “We will be conducting the drive through the end of the semester (May 11).”
However, she added that for every case of books sent off before May 1, the Arbor Day Foundation will plant a tree.
“Our goal is to keep unused or unwanted books out of the landfill,” she said. “We are helping to save our environment by recycling these books rather than tossing them away. Statistics we received state that for every 100 books, two trees are saved, as well as 943 gallons of water, 140 pounds of methane and other carbon dioxides and 330 kilowatt hours of electricity.”
Weismann, along with Maren Furuseth, advises the local PTK chapter, PTK is an honor society which focuses on leadership and service learning. The local chapter has about 25 members. “They must have completed 12 credit hours, maintaining a 3.3 grade point average or higher,” she said. “And it is open to community college students only.”
Books for the book drive can be dropped into one of three bins located on the WSC campus: on in the main entry of Stevens Hall; one in front of the WSC Bookstore; and one by the WSC library.
