WILLISTON, N.D. – WSC’s Petroleum Technology Instructor, Alberto Bellina, is now Rockwell Automation certified in two fields: Programming and Maintenance.

Bellina received the Rockwell ControlLogix Programmer and Maintainer certificates on October 16, 2017 after completing a series of courses between January and June in Boston, MA; Ventura, CA; San Jose, CA; Houston TX; Manchester, NH; and Tampa, FL.

Each of the automation certificates requires a series of four courses. Each course builds upon the last and once all four courses are complete, there is a comprehensive 90-minute online exam. Examination and courses for the Programming and/or the Maintenance path must be completed within one year of commencement.

Bellina completed all eight courses and passed both exams to be certified in Programming on July 20, 2017 and Maintenance on September 12, 2017.

“In the Bakken region, Rockwell Automation systems have the largest footprint in the area,” stated Bellina. “Students graduating in the Petroleum Production Technology program will most likely interface with Rockwell systems in their future jobs. An instructor with a solid mastery of theory and advance level of knowledge in these systems benefits student learning and outcomes, and the overall program. Graduating technicians of the program enter the workforce with knowledge of the latest automation control technologies to help their future employers improve quality, efficiency, and productivity.”

During Alberto’s training and courses, it was explained that an expansion of roles and responsibilities with more diverse skillsets and older workers retiring have created gaps that need to be filled. “Receiving these certificates will help shorten these gaps and allow for our students to be prepared as future automation technicians,” stated Bellina.

The Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College Career Training (TAACCCT) Grant provided funding through Training for Regional Energy in North Dakota (TREND) for Bellina’s certifications.

“The commitment to professional development by Instructor Bellina has significantly moved the Automation and Control Program at WSC forward, and allows the program to be responsive to industry needs in its offerings,” explained Pamela Rasmussen, TREND Grant Director and Career Navigator. “Students are meeting successful placement in area jobs that require the skills the program reaches, and are well-prepared to contribute to the workplace in applying those skills.”
