WILLISTON, N.D. - Williston's 18th annual Relay For Life, the signature fundraising event for the American Cancer Society, will be on the Williston State College campus, July 31.
The Upper Missouri Relay for Life, part of the Great West Division of the ACS, has raised over $200,000 annually since 2010. As a result, it has been considered a Mega Event and has been recognized as a nationwide fundraising event.
"With 42 teams registered, the Upper Missouri Relay For Life intends to raise over $265,000 this year," Pamela Stromme, Event Leader for the 2015 Upper Missouri Relay for Life explained. "The teams have been fundraising all year long. The funds raised are dedicated to eliminating cancer through research, education, service and advocacy."
Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma, Washington colorectal surgeon, established Relay For Life 30 years ago. Through the first Relay For Life, Dr. Klatt raised money for cancer by doing something he enjoyed: running.
"Three hundred of Dr. Klatt's friends, family and patients paid $25 to run or walk with him for 30 minutes through the day and night," Stromme said. "After 24 hours and 83 miles, Dr. Klatt raised $27,000 towards the fight against cancer."
This year's theme is "Let's set new records and rock and roll cancer free." Teams are encouraged to decorate their campsites to reflect their favorite decade of music. Setup for the event will begin Friday, July 31 at 8:00 a.m. Team registration starts at 5:00 p.m. followed by Opening Ceremonies at 6:15 p.m. and the Survivor's Lap.
"Everyone is invited to come check it out, the event goes all night since cancer never sleeps," Jenny Wolf, Team Captain of WSC stated. "There will be lots of family friendly activities going on all night until 7:30 a.m. the next morning. We expect a great turn out."
Volunteers and participants are welcome and encouraged to join.
