Posted: Apr 04 2018

WILLISTON, N.D. - In honor of Diversity Month, Williston State College students, faculty, and staff will host their third annual Diversity Week from Monday, April 9 to Friday, April 13. Daily diversity events will raise awareness of different cultures, customs, and lifestyles.

Kicking off Diversity week, WSC welcomes Odell Bizzell, an inspirational storyteller, podcast host, author, and entrepreneur who teaches students how to turn their life stories into success stories.

Featured on ESPN, David Letterman, and Oprah Winfrey, Bizzel started his career with his own small candy business in high school that earned him over $75,000 while earning an academic scholarship to a top 25 university.

"I think Odell's message of diversity and leadership will apply to a variety of students and community members," said Karissa Kjos, WSC Student Life Coordinator. "Leadership especially can always be implemented in new ways."

Odell Bizzell will speak Monday, April 9th at 7:30pm in The Well. This event is open and free to the public of all ages.

On Tuesday, April 10, Kim Weismann's Intercultural Communication class will host a North American Cultures Expo in the Teton Lounge. This expo will showcase Canadian, southern inner-city, LGBT and refugee students. Tuesday night, Diversity Club will host a nation themed 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the Skad gym at 7:00 p.m.

Posters and country informational pages created by Diversity Club will be hung around campus on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Student Life and Diversity Club will co-host an international movie day in the Teton Lounge from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

"I really enjoy watching international short films," explained Arren Romeril, WSC's Diversity Club President. "Having an international movie day will bring a lot of culture to WSC."

To conclude the week, Romeril will host trivia based off Diversity Club's information pages and posters.

"We are excited to host Diversity Week at WSC," Weismann stated. "We try to educate the campus about the diverse populations that exist on the WSC campus. We are excited to have everyone come out for our activities this year."

The Tuesday through Friday events of Diversity week are internal activities for students, faculty and staff.

WSC's Diversity Club is growing and open to new members. Students who are interested, please contact Kim Weismann. Community members with ideas for Diversity Club events are also encouraged to contact Weismann.
