Williston State College is pleased to host the FFA State Convention Workout on Wednesday, June 2. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. in the lobby of The Well, according to Kim Murphy, Agriculture Instructor at WSC. Instruction will run through the morning.

"This is a day that the FFA members can come and get some extra help to prepare for state CDEs, or career development events," Murphy said. The State FFA Convention is set for June 7-11 on the NDSU campus in Fargo.

She expects about 100 students, or more, to attend the workout event. "Last year we had 70 students attending and I know of at least three other schools who will be here this year that didn't participate last year," she said. Students will be coming from as far as New England and Garrison, as well as most of the schools closer to Williston.

FFA members will have the opportunity to perfect their skills in 9 areas of competition, including ag mechanics, which includes woodworking, welding, calibrating sprayers, etc.; ag communications, which includes radio, written work, advertisement, web design, graphic design, and more. "There's a little bit of everything in that category," Murphy said. "Then, they'll do a presentation as well." Other areas covered will be Farm Business Management, Food Science, Meat Science Evaluation, Small Animal Care, State Officer Preparations, Dairy Foods, Floriculture, Horse Evaluation, Job Interview and Nursery Landscape.

Murphy admits that she is not going to try to teach each of the 9 areas of competition that will be worked on. "The really neat part of this is that there are 9 different events and we've got lots of people volunteering their time to help and share their expertise with these students." She said that there will be other WSC instructors, high school ag instructors from around the state, and community members helping with the event.

FFA is a national organization geared to any student interested in agriculture - which has grown to much more than growing crops and raising livestock. Students in grades 7 to 12 are eligible to participate.
