WILLISTON, N.D. - This summer, from July 19-29, WSC's Associate Professor of History, Richard K. Stenberg, and Wendy McGinley, WSC's Associate Professor of Massage Therapy, will tour Germany with other interested individuals and WSC's previous president Dr. Raymond Nadolny for a Martin Luther Reformation Tour coordinated by Satrom Travel of Bismarck, ND.
"The tour will visit all of the important sites of Luther," stated Stenberg. "A lot of the sites are in former Eastern Germany and for most of the 20th Century these sites were unavailable for people to visit, so this trip has a lot of authenticity."
Trip highlights include visiting Worms where Luther refused to recant his writings and the Imperial Diet (Assembly) declared him an "outlaw"; Gutenberg Museum where the famed Gutenberg Bible is housed; Wartburg Castle where Luther translated the New Testament into German while in hiding and Wittenberg where Luther lived, taught, preached and posted the 95 Theses in October of 1517.
Stenberg and his wife Mary have worked with Pastor Jon Wellumson of Emmanuel Free Lutheran Church in Williston to plan the trip.
"The tour has transitioned from a college trip to a community event filled with a lot of history, culture and good German food," said Stenberg. "We have reached out verbally to a lot of people and many have signed up. The trip has thirty-two spots and currently we have twenty-one filled. We are looking to fill those remaining eleven spots to keep costs low."
Community members are encouraged to enroll in the tour. Early registration deadlines have been extended into May and payment plans are available.
Stenberg and Wellumson will host three community information sessions that will begin after Palm Sunday that will discuss the Reformation and its impact through documentaries, lectures, and discussions. These community information sessions will resume in the fall and are open to anyone interested in learning about the Reformation, not to just those who will participate in the July tour.
