COOP Class

Posted: Dec 14 2017
WILLISTON, N.D. –  Spring semester at Williston State College starts on January 8th, 2018. For the 35 students enrolled in COOP 197: Cooperative Education/Internship, the semester brings an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to the workforce.

The Cooperative Education/Internship has been an important staple at WSC for several years. The class is a requirement for many Career and Technical programs, but is available for students in any program. Students in the class find internships in their communities and can earn .5-6 college credits. A half credit is earned for every 45 hours of work at the internship; students are able to work 45-540 hours throughout the semester, in intervals of 45 hours. Most students use a current place of employment, but other students seek new opportunities and career fields to explore. The majority of internships are paid, but there are a handful where students volunteer their time.

"I did an internship through Cherry Creek Media in Williston. It was a great opportunity to find out what it's really like working in radio. Not only did I get college credit, but I learned about all different parts of the business. Now, I have real work experience to where I can realistically pursue that kind of career if I want to,” advised Chris Davis, WSC student.

“I recommend other students try at least one internship when in college. There's no way to learn better than experience, and employers value those kinds of candidates. It could give you a leg up on other applicants."

“The Cooperative Education/Internship course serves a dual purpose for the students. It helps students to apply the knowledge they’ve learned in the classroom and translate that to the workforce and they gain skills and experience that can really only be learned on-the-job, and translate those into the classroom”, noted Leah Windnagle, Business Instructor and coordinator for the Cooperative Education/Internship program

The Cooperative Education/Internship class is available each semester, including summer. If your business is interested in being a contact for internship placement, please contact Leah Windnagle, at leah.windnagle@willistonstate.edu.
