Posted: Apr 08 2022
WILLISTON, N.D. – Williston State College’s Joseph Dube and Luis Maria have been named to the 2022 All-North Dakota Academic Team, which recognizes the academic achievements and distinguished leadership of community college students.

In North Dakota, the community college awards are co-sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society and the North Dakota University System College Technical Education Council. Students named to the state team also are nominated for the All-USA Academic Team.

Dube and Maria were honored at a dinner and awards ceremony on Thursday, April 7, at Williston State College. Dr. Bernell Hirning, President of Williston State College, and Penny Slagle, longtime WSC basketball coach, longtime P.E. educator, current coach of Williston High School’s Clay Target League, and 2022 Citizen of the Year, spoke at the event.

Lynne Raymond, filling in for Amanda Davis and Dr. Matthew Singer, co-advisors for WSC’s PTK Chapter, were in attendance to represent Luis and Dube. Invited were District 39 Senator Dale Patten and District 10 State Senator Richard Marcellais, both Dube and Maria’s home legislators, sent their best wishes of support of Dube and Maria as they were unable to attend the event.

“As a PTK advisor, I am honored to work with the best and brightest of our students who dedicate their knowledge, skills, and hard work to improving their community and making our world a better place,” said Dr. Matthew Singer, Co-Advisor of WSC’s PTK Chapter.

Dube, a first-generation college student from Watford City, ND, is currently in his second year at WSC, working on his Associates of Arts & Sciences Degrees. He is a Phi Theta Kappa member and President’s List honoree. He plans to continue his education at Dickinson State University, where he will pursue a Bachelor of Science in Education degree with a composite in Social Science Education. His overall intention is to become a high school history teacher, eventually pursuing a graduate degree in history and someday becoming a college professor. He works as a math tutor on campus and in his free time, he enjoys spending time with family and is active in his local church.

“It is a huge honor to be a part of this and to have received this award, I have worked hard these past two years to be where I am and this is one of those things that shows me it’s paying off,” by Dube.

Maria, a sophomore, is earning his Associate of Arts & Sciences degrees. He will transfer to North Dakota State University for Computer Engineering. He has worked as a Lead Math Lab Supplemental Instructor and is actively involved in advising the Math & Sciences Department about classes that should be offered in the future. He also advises his peers on their degree requirements. Maria’s philosophy is one of self-responsibility and accountability.

“Receiving such an amazing award has reminded me that hard work and perseverance truly pays off,” said Maria.

Nominations are based on outstanding academic performance and service to the college and community. Each member of the North Dakota team receives a certificate of congratulations from Governor Doug Burgum, an award certificate, a medallion, and a monetary award.
