WSC class looking for children who like a good story

WILLISTON, N.D. - Williston State College's Oral Interpretation class is asking the community for help with the class's service learning project this semester.

Students in the class learn to interpret various types of literature, both verbally and non-verbally, according to Instructor Kim Weismann.

"Verbal interpretation may include reading books to children, acting out a scene from a book or play, using different character voices," she said. "Non-verbal would be acting like you're sneaking up on someone - basically acting out a scene without using words."

As a service learning project for the class, students are required to interact with younger children, reading to them in a classroom setting.

"Most of the students in the class are interested in becoming elementary teachers, so this class is great for them," Weismann said.

They are currently looking for children, aged 3 and older, to come to the college at 2 p.m. on the designated days so that the college students can read to them.  Weismann said that the children will be with the students up to 50 minutes. Dates for the project are: Friday, Aug. 31 and Wednesday, Sept. 5, Children's Book Unit; Sept. 26 and 28, Storytelling Unit; Oct. 5 and 8, Prose Unit; Oct. 24, 29 and 31, Poetry Unit; and Nov. 7 and 9, Themed Program of Literature.
