WSC Communication classes looking for veteran’s stories

WILLISTON, N.D. – Dr. Kim Weismann, Professor of Communication, Arts and Human Sciences Department Chair at Williston State College, and her Interpersonal Communication classes are collecting veteran stories for an oral history project.
This idea originally started as a conversation between Williams County Veterans Service Officer (VSO) Grant Carns and Kim Weismann about six years ago. Students are paired one-on-one with a veteran to collect and write the stories of veterans.
Veterans can share as much, or as little as they feel comfortable with sharing. They also have a say whether their story is shared publicly during the students’ final presentation in December, or if they want to keep their story private.
“The students are always a bit nervous to complete the project, as they want to tell the stories in the best and most accurate way they can,’ said Dr. Weismann.
Every consecutive year, this project has had success, with families of veterans coming back and thanking the students for completing this project. The families really appreciate having documented stories of their family members.
“The students grow to have a better appreciation for our military members and their service,” said Dr. Weismann.
