The Continuing Education division of Williston State College, has announced its schedule for the summer camp program, Kids on Campus 2010. Nine programs will be presented for students in grades one to six.
"We've expanded the program this year," said Kim Wenko, Continuing Education Specialist. "This is the first year that we've opened it up to those entering grades one to three. Normally we only offer the classes to those in grades four to six."
Junior Law Enforcement Training, which is offered only to fourth to sixth graders will provide insight into what a law enforcement officer does and how crimes are investigated. It will be taught by Det. Heather Cecil of the Williston D.A.R.E. program.
A Summer Japanese Language Camp will be taught by Joyce Nadolny Shui. Students will learn to speak some Japanese, explore some important cultural traditions through craft-time and present a performance on the final day.
Wenko will lead the Pottery Creation workshop as well as the Trip to Fort Union/Fort Buford/Confluence. "I will get them out to the fort, then the rangers at Fort Union will lead the tour," Wenko said.
Jeremy Mohl, a safety instructor at WSC, and also a trained clown, will lead the workshop New Clown in Town, which will allow students to bring out their silly side and polish their funny bone techniques.
WSC Agriculture instructor Kim Murphy will be in charge of Agriculture Day, which will provide information on soil and what makes soil good for planting, as well as what crops are grown in the area, what they look like and how they are used.
Also on the list of classes are Make Your Own Jewelry; Cookie Creation; and Media Day.
Some of the classes will run a few hours, while some will go up to four days. Most are limited to ten students, however, Wenko stated that if a class fills up and more students would like to take part, "I'm more than willing to add another session."
"We want this to be educational, yet fun," Wenko said. "We're hoping that if we can get students here on campus and familiarize them with the campus, they will have a sense that the campus belongs to them as well, not just the college students."
All registration must be completed one week prior to the class day. For more information, contact Kim at 774- 6236.
