TC Energy Awards $20,000 Build Strong Grant to Williston State College to Enhance Petroleum Technology & Automation Training

Williston, ND — Williston State College (WSC) has received a $20,000 grant from TC Energy’s Build Strong program to strengthen hands-on learning in its Petroleum Technology and Automation programs.

The grant funding was used to purchase new lab and classroom training equipment, including Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) units. These tools are essential in modern industrial systems—used to automate machinery, control motors, and monitor safety in facilities across the oil and gas industry.

“These new PLC and VFD trainers allow students to work directly with the same technologies they’ll encounter in the field,” said Alexey Kovalev, Petroleum Technology Instructor at WSC. “They’ll be able to simulate real-world operations and gain experience troubleshooting and maintaining automation systems safely and efficiently. TC Energy’s support directly enhances our ability to prepare skilled professionals for the region’s energy sector.”

The addition of this equipment comes at a crucial time for the program, which had previously faced limitations due to a shortage of quality training units. With this investment, students now have access to industry-relevant equipment that supports Automation, Instrumentation, and Controls talent development—key skills in today’s workforce.

A portion of the Build Strong grant funds will also be used to purchase additional training equipment before the end of Fall 2025, further expanding hands-on learning opportunities for students.

TC Energy also continues to support students through its scholarship program, part of the company’s broader community giving initiative. Two WSC sophomores in the Electronics & Industrial Controls program were selected to receive sizeable scholarships to put towards their academic studies in automation.
