WSC spring numbers strong, dual credit up tremendously
WILLISTON, N.D. - Williston State College has just released their official Spring 2014 Census data and things are looking good. Headcount is up from 812 last spring to 891 making for the 4th largest spring enrollment on record. Full-time enrollment is up by 8.47%, while scheduled credit hours have also seen an increase.
"We're very pleased with the increase," said Kayla McKeil, Director for Marketing. "The spring semester is always a tricky one for enrollment. People usually associate going back to school with the fall, but really the spring is an excellent time to start too."
WSC has also seen a great increase in dual credit headcount growing from 190 last spring to 289 this spring. Dual credit is defined as a college course that high school sophomores, juniors, or seniors can take for which the individual earns both high school and college credit.
The dual credit trend has nationally been on the rise as educational costs continue to increase. WSC and the WSC Foundation have long seen dual credit as a significant opportunity and continue to aid students by keeping dual credit tuition costs at $50 per credit hour for the last couple of years. (ND, MT, and MN students are charge $139.36 per credit hour for non-dual credit classes.) It's possible that dual credit tuition costs might increase this upcoming fall; however, work is being continued to keep the increase at a minimum.
"We are working to build a stronger relationship with our regional high schools by offering more courses on their campuses while still keeping high standards for our institution's accreditation, programs, and course transferability opportunities," says Kari Rustand, WSC Executive Director for Extended Learning. "In the end, Williston State College's Dual Credit Program is one of the smartest investments parents, schools, and students can make in the future of our youth and our communities."
