Things to Do & What to Expect When Applying for Financial Aid

AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE PRIOR TO THE SEMESTER YOU WANT TO BEGIN CLASSES: 

  • Complete the WSC Admission Application online and provide all requested documents. Learn more about application for admission process.
Official WSC correspondence will only be sent to your official Williston State email address
  • Plan on how and where you will create and remember the many user ID's, passwords and answers to security questions. Do not share, lose or forget online security information.

OCTOBER 1st: 

  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the next school year.

o  Your first step is to create an FSA ID by visiting: https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm. This is required to sign your FAFSA electronically. The student and one parent (for dependent students) must sign the FAFSA; If you've already created an FSA ID you will not need to create a new ID and you will use your same FSA ID.

o   Second step is for student to login using their FSA ID by visiting: https://fafsa.ed.gov/. You and one parent (for dependent students) will use prior-prior year taxes. Example: 2018-2019 FAFSA will use 2017 taxes and 2018-19 FAFSA will use 2016 taxes).

  • PRIORITY DEADLINE IS APRIL 15.

  • Review the Student Aid Report (SAR) that you receive 3 to 5 days after you complete the FAFSA. Contact WSC Financial Aid if you were selected for verification. 

JANUARY:

  • WSC's Internal Scholarships application for the 2020-2021 academic year will open in January 2020 for all current and future students.

  • SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION CLOSES MAY 1st, 2020!

MARCH:

  • Log on CAMPUS CONNECTION and Check your To-Do List [right side of page]

o    Click More to view more specific information

o   Respond to any requests for information from WSC, including, but not limited to: Verification Worksheet - Visit WSC Student Financial Aid Forms. IRS tax transcript is required if selected for verification. You can request this by visiting: https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript. (Be sure it's the correct tax year and correct transcript - this can take between 3 to 5 weeks to get back and may delay your financial aid).

JUNE:
  • Respond to any WSC Scholarship Award Letter received.

  • Respond to the WSC Financial Aid Award Notice by accepting or denying aid that was offered. Online access to Accept/Decline Awards on the CampusConnection Portal can be found in your Student Center, then under Finances. Grants and scholarships are automatically accepted.

  • Inform the WSC Financial Aid Office of any other scholarship awards.

  • If accepting a student loan for the first time, then you must complete online Entrance Loan Counseling for undergraduates and complete the loan agreement (Master Promissory Note - MPN) for undergraduates by visiting: https://studentloans.gov. Log In using your FSA ID.

  • Routinely check and read your e-mail.

ONE MONTH BEFORE SEMESTER BEGINS:

  • Check your account summary on Campus Connection after tuition and fees have been applied. You will be able to view your total charges and view anticipated aid, then you will need to pay the difference by the final payment deadline. Be sure to check back after disbursement to make sure the anticipated aid did pay for your charges. Pay any unpaid balance before the fee payment deadline or contact the Student Finance Office about payment plans or other options.

TWO WEEKS BEFORE FALL SEMESTER BEGINS & 1 WEEK BEFORE SPRING SEMESTER BEGINS:

  • Purchase books or follow the book charge process for the semester. Contact the Student Financial Aid Office if you are unsure if you have financial aid and you can charge your books.

3RD FRIDAY ONCE SCHOOL STARTS:

  • You may pick up your excess aid on the first day that it is released. You will receive an email to your WSC email from the Student Finance Office. You may also receive your excess aid by direct deposit if you have completed the necessary forms prior to disbursement.
